Chocolate-dipped strawberries sweeten Valentine’s Day

Chocolate dipped strawberries are becoming the gift of choice for sweethearts on Valentine’s Day.
Bake My Day, Comfort Food and Casual Catering, is dipping strawberries in delectable chocolate for your sweetheart. A pound of chocolate strawberries, at $12.99, is packaged in a white box, ready for giving.
If you would like to spend a little more, ask for the strawberries to be rolled in almonds, pecans, or coconut, for $24.99. Chocolate choices are milk, dark or white. The gifts can be delivered for $5.
Bake My Day is at 1350 Eastland Drive. Call (859) 492-5936. Deadline for orders is Feb. 12.
Larry Kezele, owner of Ruth Hunt Candy in Mt. Sterling, orders almost 400 cases of long-stemmed, extra large strawberries from California and they arrive a day or two before the staff begins dipping.
“What is so special about these strawberries, is that they are very fragile and folks must make a special effort to pick them up on the days that we make them: Feb. 12-14. They could last a couple of days in the refrigerator, but they begin to leak the strawberry juices through the chocolate almost immediately. Therefore they are the very best the same day. I think it is so cool to get a gift that is so precious that it must be eaten fresh on that same day. It’s really like a custom made Valentines gift that everyone can afford. And since we only sell them in our Mt. Sterling (Maysville Avenue) and Lexington store (Woodhill Shopping Center) the giver must go out of their way to pick them up.
“We don’t take orders ahead of time, it’s first come, first serve.
“We wash some of the berries the last thing the night before so that they can dry. We start dipping at 5 a.m. The berries aren’t ready until about 10 a.m. and customers are generally standing in line waiting for them.
The berries are dipped in milk chocolate and white chocolate. Call (800) 927-0302 or visit www.ruthhuntcandy.com.

Those do look good! Of course not being in your town, I’m compelled to be jealous. But not to worry - I discovered a huge selection of unique artisan chocolate truffles to keep me busy!
Local news here just ran a story on Chatham’s Fine Chocolates.
My muttering may just be proverbial “sour strawberries”, but I am actually excited about my chocolate find!
